When laser cutting is used to machine stainless steel, because stainless steel contains 10% to 20% chromium, stainless steel and iron are prone to exothermic reactions with oxygen during the cutting process. Chromium oxides prevent oxygen from entering the interior of the molten material. The amount of oxygen entering the molten layer is reduced, the molten layer is not completely oxidized, the reaction is reduced, and the cutting speed is reduced. Laser cutting of stainless steel requires relatively high processing skills. Laser cutting has high precision, fast speed, small heat-affected zone, and is not easy to deform. High cost performance and low processing cost.
 
When using laser cutting to process carbon steel, usually carbon steel within 10mm can be well cut by oxygen-assisted fusion laser cutting, and the gap is also very narrow. The thickness of the steel plate can be as small as 0.1mm, and for low carbon steel, its heat affected zone is hardly considered. The carbon steel kerf is flat, clean, reliable and vertical. The presence of phosphorus and sulfur segregation zones in mild steel will lead to dissolution of the cutting edge. Therefore, the dressing quality of high-quality steel with impurities is better than that of hot-rolled steel. A slightly higher carbon content can slightly improve the trimming quality of carbon steel, but its heat-affected zone has expanded.
 
It can be seen that due to the different properties of carbon steel and stainless steel, the technical requirements when using laser cutting are also very different.
